`48 DEGREES

The first real front of the season came through last Friday. It won’t last the week — here’s how to use it.
On October 13 it hit 95 with an overnight low of 79. Three days later the high was 75, and by Sunday morning it was 48 degrees in The Woodlands.
If you’ve been here through a Houston summer you know how rare that is before November, and you know the other half of it: the forecast climbs back to 86 by Wednesday and stays mid-80s through the weekend.
So this is a preview, not the season. The season comes in a few weeks. But for the next two or three mornings, the single best amenity this township has is genuinely pleasant to use — and most people will spend it indoors.
Some things worth knowing about that amenity.
The pathway network is bigger than almost anyone realises: 206 miles — 173 paved, 33 natural-surface — connecting 126 parks. Most people walk one loop near their house and never register that it joins everything else.
What you have depends on where you live. Creekside Park leads with 28.9 miles of pathway, then Sterling Ridge at 26.1 and Cochran’s Crossing at 25.3. Grogan’s Mill, the oldest village, has 21.8.
If you want dirt rather than concrete, George Mitchell Nature Preserve is the answer and it isn’t close — 33.9 miles, more natural-surface trail than the rest of the township combined. Spring Creek Nature Trail is 4.3 miles on its own.
If you want distance without driving first, the long continuous runs parallel the big roads: Kuykendahl at 6.6 miles, Lake Woodlands Drive at 6.2, Research Forest at 6.1.

A TOOL FOR IT
I built the Woodlands Trail Guide, a free app that maps the whole network from the Township’s own published data.
What I actually use it for: tell it how far you want to go — 2 miles, 5 miles, an hour — and it builds a route that brings you back where you started. Start from where you are, a typed address, or anywhere you tap on the map. Turn-by-turn directions written for pathways rather than streets, and if you wander off it quietly finds you a new way.
It also shows the current temperature at the trailhead, which this week is the only number that matters.
